Hello

As there was a lot of interest in awareness of RA I thought it would be good to start a new thread specifically for that subject. We were discussing about whats going on in local areas with RA. So if anyone wants to bring something to our attention they can post about it here. I think it would be good to see whats going on at a grass roots level. I think it could cover a multitude of things posting media coverage of RA related stories, to what the local clubs are doing if anything to even perhaps NRAS doing a mailshot to GPs and asking for our help like checking if we see them in the surgery and bringing some down next time we are there. Small little things but from little seeds to acorns grow.... BigGrin

I have asked that the folder Fundraising be changed to a more broader name of Fundraising and Awareness. I have posted the link to the thread below.

I have been having a look at a local group in Leicester. There doesn't seem to be one set up and the nearest one to me would be Birmingham or Solihull (30miles away) There is a local Arthritis Care group set up but it is more of a bingo and buns group.. and while I love bingo and buns (especially the cream variety) it wasn't a proactive group.

If there is anyone in the Leicester area that would like to set one up then let me know.

In regards to fundraising..... I could perhaps look at having an information day at local Asda.

I've recently met up with my new rheumatologist and he was especially supportive of self management etc, and also pointed out that there are very little resources available to 13-18 age range.

My local doctors surgery did have some leaflets for NRAS but had nothing there yesterday. There could be an opportunity for an information/fundraising day there as well

I have to say I think this is the wrong place for this thread. Fundraising is fundraising, and completely different from raising awareness of RA. Fundraising has relatively few posts at pesent (although hopefully these will increase) and the subject would just be swamped by stuff about awareness. Why couldn't we just start a new thread entitled "Raising Awareness"? I know, I know, I'm a pain in the old proverbial!

I can see where you're coming from Jean but in a way fundraising and awareness come under the same umbrella... by raising awareness, you raise support and in the long run, funding.

By raising awareness of how arthritis affects someone, you could affectively give support to a family member who in turn will support the charity.

I'm a newbie to this site but I have to agree with Jeanb.

My understanding is that only members of NRAS can log into this forum for reading and posting.

If that's correct would that not mean the awareness issues arising would not be seen by anyone other than ourselves?

I agree with the last 2 posters. It is only ourselves who would be seeing this and if not so, I would want to know why! Fundraising does happen on the forum by individuals who are doing something for NRAS eg Lylie's beautiful blanket, and if we are able and wish to, we contribute usually using Just giving. I think that this is the way that it should continue.

It is only members that can see this thread... and my understanding of this thread of raising awareness was meant as in how can we raise awareness of how arthritis affects people and the profile of NRAS...

Just as we support each other when it comes to fundraising, I also believe we can support each other when it comes to raising the profile of NRAS and our conditions... i.e what goes on in local areas... has something been a success in one area that could be extended to another area..

Correct me if I'm wrong Mari...

Yes helly thats how I see it in a nutshell. ThumpUp

NRAS has a lot of stuff on their main website that can be seen by non members AND they have quite a bit of on line presence for example Facebook and twitter. Heres a recent blog by claire on twitter http://nrascharity.blogs...ame-you-think-that.html So there is plenty of information there for non members and members alike.

They also have a voluteer day coming up at the end of the month. Did you know the have lots of ways of fundraising like dinner4good where someone hosts a dinner for a charity of their choice. However I am so engrossed in the forum I dont really look at the main site, i think its because I still have problems accessing the forum so I am a bit blinkered. Though all this amazing stuff can be seen by everyone. We can even shop for our supports online and NRAS gets something from it. Blink

We started off a post wanting to change things, change peoples awareness. We ourselves dont realise what is done on our behalf by people with or without RA. So having somewhere to post all this good stuff is for us, a morale booster which can it generates ideas and widens the circle. which promotes our cause and we benefit from it. Its for us. NRAS built the forum for us to support each other, and I think this information would be of tremendous benefit. BigGrin

I am interested to see posts whether its flagging an upcoming local event or if someonbody decides to do something themselves. little nudges of whats coming up like with doreen telling us that theres a radio 4 appeal on sunday.

Jean are you saying tha it might get confused with people posting about issues where people dont understand RA?

Regards

Mari

I just posting re elenors comment on access to the forum. The old forum you could access without being a member you just couldnt post and thats the same with most websites I believe. I went on to the MS website the other week to see what issues they have and was able to access it no problem. However I dont know if you can still access this forums if you are not a member since its been upgraded. I tried to find a way in as a non member and gave up. Anyone else have a try?

Confused

Hi Mari - no, I' not saying that at all - my point has nothing whatsoever to do with who does and desn't have access to the site. I just feel that both "funding" and "awareness" should have their own special forum section so that we can see at a glance which is which. If I'm trying to find, say Paul's Great Northern Run details, I don't want to have to plough through a mountain of stuff on awareness to access it. Also, as awareness is, imo, the most important issue at present, it also needs it's own forum section.

Hi Mari,

No-one can access the forum without logging in so have to be members. It was actually the same on the old forum, you had to log in to access it.
A lot of other websites have open forums where you can read but not post if you are not a member, I often have a look on the ARC site. Must say I prefer it to be how ours is and wouldn't want non-members to be able to read.

Agree with this 100% Doreen. Best keeping it closed and safe if infiltrators don't get in that is.

Hi Jean I totally agree with what you say. Plus, I have problems scrolling through stuff to because of my wrists, so lo lets ask for a separate folder for Awareness if possible.

Sorry i got a bit confused with the forum being open, but now i remember I had to join first before I could post RollEyes
